PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL FOR 'A HISTORY OF'

To produce three pieces of promotional material in conjunction with 'a history of'.

1. A none A-format poster
2. An interesting flyer
3. Another piece of promotional material

To link this work to my 'history of' I decided to create a fictional exhibition titled 'What's in my bag? The ladies of Paris' that was to be put on in the V&A. I used existing V&A exhibitions to gather information and research regarding logos, costing and how their promotional material is usually set out.
The idea was that the exhibition displayed a representation of the iconic style of a selection of some of the most famous ladies of Paris, which would come across using this idea of all the different items a woman keeps in her bag. What a woman takes with her, says a lot about who she is, her personality, her way of thinking, her style and her favourite things.

I decided that I would use some imagery from the summer brief, as well as creating some new design ideas, continuing to use a similar colour scheme and typeface.

SUMMER BRIEF WORK

NONE A-FORMAT POSTER

I spent some time looking at different posters that had been designed specifically for V&A exhibitions. The main information on the posters include the V&A logo and the title of the exhibition itself. Instead of creating a poster that would simply be placed in and around the museum, I wanted to produce a poster that would be on an extremely large scale, used at the entrance of the actual exhibition. It therefore wouldn't be a poster outside of the museum environment, but inside, promotion and drawing you in.

Three main designs would be available, for each of the women of Paris I looked at during my summer research - Marie Antoinette, Jeanne Moreau and Brigitte Bardot.
Each item in 'their bag' would be used to create a repeated pattern for the poster.

The pattern created was a bit off, so that it didn't look too repetitive and uniform.

As the pattern was quite busy, the information on it needed to be simple, too the point and clear.
I started by drawing out the logo so that it was in-keeping with the rest of my designs.

The title of the exhibition and the logo was all that was to be included on the poster itself. This was not only because of the pattern, but also because all the information, including pricing and dates, was on the flyers and invitations.

Each poster was printed, and stuck up on the wall. My peers were then asked as to which design they thought worked best, and design 3 was chosen. It was suggested that on the poster, a different typeface could be used that suited the V&A logo (Bodoni), however when this was tried it just didn't look quite right. The harshness of the typeface contrasted a bit too much with the illustrations.

FLYER

As the flyer had to be a little bit different, as well as still being representative of the exhibition, the shape of a handbag was to be used. Emphasis needed to put on this idea of 'what's in my bag?'.

An existing illustration was to be used as the base of the flyer. Information would then be placed on the reverse and these would be handed out to the public.

INVITATIONS

I decided to put a bit of a twist on the invitations that would be sent out, each relating to a bag within the exhibition.

FEEDBACK

Before the crit, a list of at least five questions were to be compiled that we wanted to find the answer to regarding our work.

1. How is my use of colour? Does it look like a set?
2. Do the typefaces work together? (hand rendered and digital)
3. What do you think of the illustrations?
4. How could I make the flyer more interesting?
5. Do you understand what they're promoting?
6. Who do you think is the target audience?

Feedback 1

STRENGTHS

Beautiful use of colours, they work well as a set and compliment each other.
The illustration works well, suitable for the audience. Very feminine and elegant.
The patterns are really good on the poster, good balance of colours and neat. Also, it's not overcrowded.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Type hierarchy needs a little touch up.
Flyer would be cool it was in 3D and thicker stock.
Disconnection between perfumes and the rest.
Poster needs to be more clearer on the concept of 'Ladies of Paris'.

CONSIDERATIONS

The different point sizes within the leaflets so its a little easier to read, colours of the leaflets (particularly Marie Antoinette) could be a little brighter.
How big would the poster be? Would be nice if it was really large so it would catch the audiences eye in the public domain.
Consideration of stock if they were to be printed for distribution.
More colour contrasts on Chance Chanel product. Chance is difficult to read.

Feedback 2
STRENGTHS

Good relevant and well drawn illustrations.
Use of pastel colours are great.
Yes, typefaces work well.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Flyers could contain more info about what the exhibition involves.
I know what it's for but I don't know what the concept of the exhibition is.

CONSIDERATIONS

All ties into a set well.
