TYPE AND GRID

MAKE-UP OF TYPE

- components
- weights and sizes
- styles

KERNING = space between a pair

Here I have found an online game that helps you learn how to kern type! Quite fun.

http://type.method.ac/

TRACKING = the whole lot
LEADING = space between sentences/line space

FONT = digital typeface on a computer
TYPEFACE = can be everywhere, the whole range

TECHNICAL STUFF

- 10pt lettering + 4pt leading = 14pt line feed (baseline to baseline)
- Same point size but different x height impacts on visual size, x heights aren't always the same

LIGATURES

- 'F' is always a problematic letter to fit together with another
- Ligatures are often used to solve this problems, but are also used in books to reflect elegance etc

USING TYPE

- HIERARCHY, heading, sub heading, intro, body, captions, folios
- READABILITY, motorway signs, capitals on heading, reverse out (thins on serifs bleed in because of the link, with colour it has to go through four layers so may become even fuzzier), bold needs tracking
- SPECIALS, BREAKOUTS, DROP CAPS (PULL QUOTES)

MEASURING TYPE

http://www.flickr.com/photos/eyemagazine/5912069685/

A paper version of the type measure above was used in order to work out the different pt sizes of type within a newspaper spread.
Newspapers come in three different formats
1. Broadsheet - the largest of the three, being twice the size of a tabloid newspaper. The Sunday Times and The Daily Telegraph are two examples of broadsheets.
2. Tabloid - newspaper with a much more compact size, with rough dimensions of 430 × 280 mm (16.9 in × 11.0 in). They usually emphasise particular topics such as celebrity gossip, television and crime stories, which are seen in newspapers like The Daily Mirror and The Daily Mail.
3. Berliner - the size of most European newspapers. It is midway in size between the other two formats, and is often sold folded. In the UK, The Guardian decided to opt for this style of paper. (article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/gpc/berliner-format)
