By taking my phrases, I wanted to create relevant illustrations that were both simple and lighthearted. I wanted to use the hand rendered effect to make each individual card more exclusive and distinctive. The cards need to stand out and attract the attention of those browsing within a shop. By using illustration, this is offering the customer something different and personal. Colour will also need to be considered in order to make the cards catch the eye.
Idea generation
Love pills - it was a love there is no cure for
I started by drawing out possible text that could be placed on either a box of tablets or bottle of ointment, reflecting the statement above. Love pills are evidently non-existant and this adds humour to quite a serious statement.
This was then scanned in and the pen tool was used to trace around the text.
Colour was added to the text in order to see how it would look. Colours were chosen in terms of relevance to the subject, and the text was rotated in order to fit within it's location.
I decided to go with the idea of a pill packet, as it seemed more appropriate than liquid medicine or any other form of 'cure'. This was simply sketched up digitally, keeping the design minimal and making sure there was enough space to add text.
Colour inspiration for my illustrations was taken from Kate Bingaman-Burt's 'Show The Love', as they were appropriate to my context and added a slight quirkiness to the designs. It veered away from the usual colours seen on 'love' themed cards, appealing to the younger market.
Matchbox - you're a perfect match
The steps above were repeated for each of the phrases included and the colour scheme was kept consistent all the way through.
The text was drawn out in a similar style to that above in order to create consistency within the designs. It then went through the same stages.
Ring box - you put a ring on it
Ring - what a sparkler!
Love heart - love you more than...
Love
This repeated pattern was created using the text above in order to create a card that wasn't too specific. By including one general design, this could possibly be used on a number of occasions. It will also allow me to apply the pattern over a range of products.
